Should police officers be in schools?

In the wake of national protests over the police killing of George Floyd, schools are reconsidering whether or not to maintain contracts which place police officers at schools. Proponents of removing police officers argue police do not keep students safe. In fact, they only criminalize students who need help. The role a police officer plays in a school could easily be absorbed by administrative staff. Instead of police, there should be more counselors and people who can help students. Supporters of a police presence on campus argue the benefits of having police on campus outweigh any negative points. Officers are able to build relationship with students and if a dangerous situation arises, the police could react much more quickly.

Police officers are trained to police others, not to be a social worker or counselor. With depressing regularity, it is a common theme to see police officers arresting young children for behavioral issues. Sometimes incidents go viral when police officers hurt or manhandle children in order to make the arrest. If a student is acting out, it's likely that their problems run deeper than a one-off behavorial incident. Instead of relying on police to handle the situation, it makes much more sense to rely on counselors and social workers — people who are actually trained to address those problems.

Supporters of police in schools argue they are there to keep students safe and to show students how they can positively interact with law enforcement. The fact that some schools have voted to keep their contracts with local police show that police officers do have a positive role to play in schools. Officers serve as a mentor and role model to many students.
