Is Donald Trump a threat to America?

President Trump threatened to invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act to deploy active-duty soldiers to American cities if governors do not get the situation under control. This would mean armed soldiers would be enforcing the law—unanswerable to local elected authorities. Without exaggeration, many are terrified at the prospect of Trump wielding such immense and dangerous power. He is a threat to the stability of the United States and our democracy. However, Trump's supporters see his statement as tough but necessary—this level of chaos cannot be tolerated. Trump is doing his job—he is making sure order is kept in the United States.

If this were happening in any other country, we would be deeply worried. On the face of it, Trump is threatening to activate authoritarian powers after threatening violence on protesters. He has repeatedly attacked fellow Americans over the years, he's attacked American institutions, he's attacked our allies and separated migrant children from their families in an effort to deter people from coming to the United States illegally. He is uniquely dangerous.

Trump's supporters argue that he ultimately is doing his job—as president, he must ensure that the United States is safe and secure. Widespread looting, property damage, and clashes between police and civilians are fundamentally unacceptable for a functioning country—order needs to be restored.
