Should we cancel 'cancel culture'?

Twitter has been on fire since a recent Harper's Magazine letter called to end cancel culture. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling was one of the 150 signees of the letter stating that cancel culture "calls for swift and severe retribution in response to perceived transgressions of speech and thought." While many agree that cancel culture is detrimental to our society because it goes against free-thinking and freedom of speech others say it holds folks responsible when they publicly condemn another group or make ignorant statements that perpetuate discrimination. Are you against cancel culture?

Cancel culture was designed to hold individuals accountable for making ignorant statements against a marginalized group. For instance singer Ryan Adams was canceled for allegedly carrying on a relationship with a minor. Rapper Kanye West was canceled for saying that Black people chose to be slaves. West's comments are contributing to the idea that Blacks are less than which is why the community is still subject to racism and discrimination today. As for Adams, dating a minor is a big deal because it promotes predatory behavior and normalizes child abuse.

But some still argue freedom of speech is the ultimate liberty and should be protected at all costs. Many believe that cancel culture is silly and someone shouldn't be fired from their job or subject to consequences just because they think differently and express opposing sides of view from the general public.
