What's more important in career advancement: a promotion or a raise?

The idea of a career is so…expansive. You can take it anywhere, essentially, depending on what you want to do and where, eventually, you’d like to end up. Depending on how long you’ve been on your current career path, there are two things that indicate advancing to the next level. The first is a promotion, a step up in one’s title that indicates greater responsibility. Then there’s getting a raise, an increase in payment that nods to hard work. Which is most important?

What’s in a title change, fair Juliet? Well, a lot, actually. When you first start out at a job, you’re giving the lowest-level title; a promotion and a title change is both a symbolic and official indication that you’ve put in the time and effort to level up. You’re not a “junior” anymore, but a “senior”; not a “senior,” but an “executive.” You get the idea.

While people like to pretend that hierarchies at the office don’t exist, they do, and almost certainly always will. Isn’t it kind of nice to have your hard work and aptitude in your career acknowledged?

Being promoted is nice and all, but what’s in a name without cold, hard cash? The best way to reward an exemplary employee is via a boost to their paycheck. Seeing an increase on one’s paycheck is the clearest indication that you’re getting ahead at your career, not some bogus job title that doesn’t contribute to all those vacations you’ve got planned out for the rest of the year.

Isn’t the whole point of having a job to make money, anyway? And more of it, as time goes on, to support yourself and those you care about? A promotion without the increase in salary doesn’t do that for you. Raises do. So raise your hands if you’re about those raises, please.
